The Cortés Region recently deployed Central America’s first grid-scale battery storage system – a 20 MW beast that can power 15,000 homes during outages. Think of it as a giant energy piggy bank for rainy days (literally!).
[pdf] The project, the main objective of which is to provide greater storage capacity for imported diesel fuel, fuel oil, jet fuel and gasoline, consists of the following components: a) Extension of Port Neves storage facilities; b) Establishment of storage facilities on Principe; c) Establishment and expansion of distribution facilities; and, d) Technical Assistance, particularly with respect to the procurement of petroleum products, as well as management capabilities.
[pdf] New research coming out of the University of Iceland introduces the novel idea of adding EES technologies such as Lithium-ion batteries across the country’s grid to store it’s 100 percent renewably sourced electricity, effectively creating the world’s first renewable “green battery.”
