The project encompasses the construction of a solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) minigrid to be built on the island of Buka, within the autonomous region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. It will address the electricity needs of the region, which relies heavily on diesel generators.
[pdf] The project, owned and operated by AES Distributed Energy, consists of a 28 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and a 100 MWh five-hour duration energy storage system. AES designed the unique DC-coupled solution, dubbed “the PV Peaker Plant,” to fully integrate PV and storage as a power plant.
[pdf] With their small size, lightweight, high-temperature performance, fast recharge rate and longer life, the lithium-ion battery has gradually replaced the traditional lead-acid battery as a better option for widespread use in the communication energy storage system and more industrial fields.
